International Day for the Eradication of Poverty 2020

October 17, 2020

CGFNS joins the United Nations in recognizing today as the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty. This year marks the 27th anniversary of the declaration of October 17 as the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty by the General Assembly.

2020’s Theme: Acting together to achieve social and environmental justice for all.

Poverty is not solely an economic issue, but rather a multidimensional phenomenon that encompasses a lack of both income and the basic capabilities to live in dignity. Persons living in poverty experience many interrelated and mutually reinforcing deprivations that prevent them from realizing their rights and perpetuate their poverty, including:

  • dangerous work conditions
  • unsafe housing
  • lack of nutritious food
  • unequal access to justice
  • lack of political power
  • limited access to healthcare

As an NGO in Consultative Status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) and a member of the Conference of NGOs in Consultative Relationship with the United Nations (CoNGO), CGFNS supports multilateral solutions to end poverty by addressing all of the interrelated issues that allow it to persist.
