International Migrants Day 2020: Reimagining Human Mobility

CGFNS International joins in the international community in celebrating International Migrants Day and recognizing the challenges, opportunities, and contributions of migrants across the globe.

This year, the COVID-19 pandemic brought renewed attention to the complex circumstances impacting the broader migration landscape. Migrants have been on the frontlines of the pandemic as health professionals treating our sick and the essential workers bringing some normalcy to our lives under lockdown. They also often find themselves more at-risk for COVID-19 or its fallout, such as job and housing loss. We’re learning more about the conditions that force people to become migrants, the socioeconomic effects of migration on source and destination countries, as well as the ever-present risk of exploitation and trafficking.

Migration is an irrevocable fact of our increasingly connected world and the lessons of 2020 require us to reimagine what human mobility looks like: migration should be a choice and not a necessity, and migrants’ human rights and dignity must be protected.

Today, we also celebrate the second anniversary of an important milestone toward that vision: the UN Global Compact on Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration.

As an NGO in consultative status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council, CGFNS was named to the UN’s NGO Committee on Migration and attended the conference to adopt the Global Compact on Migration.

On International Migrants Day and every other day, CGFNS is proud to provide a pathway for migrating health professionals to retain their dignity and pursue their goals across borders by recognizing their qualifications and ability to practice safely.
