“Our Nurses. Our Future.” CGFNS International Salutes the International Nursing Community
CGFNS International President and CEO Peter Preziosi issued the following statement in commemoration of International Nurses Day:
On International Nurses Day, May 12, CGFNS joins the global community in recognizing nurses’ invaluable contributions to humanity and their leadership in achieving better, more accessible health care and a better world.
This year’s theme for International Nurses Day – “Our Nurses. Our Future.” – evokes the vital role that nurses themselves must play in addressing the threats to patient safety and quality care that both pre-dated and outlasted the recent pandemic. Not least of these are shortages and staffing issues that are fueling burnout and causing millions of nurses to leave the profession.
The more than 27 million women and men who make up the global nursing profession come from a wide range of backgrounds, are highly trained and have diverse skills and experiences. Many of them commit to continuous and rigorous education to remain at the forefront of their field. Their knowledge and insights, as well as their leadership, are needed now more than ever if we are to achieve the health targets of the Sustainable Development Goals.
The world needs more nurses and more nurse leaders to show the way to a healthier and safer world. On International Nurses Day, let us all join in solidarity to make that happen.
